CHICAGO & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fitch has downgraded the Issuer Default Rating (IDR) of General Motors Corporation (GM) to 'B-' from 'B', and assigned a Rating Outlook Negative.
Paychecks Shrink and Insecurity Grows (14025)

Sometimes we would rather be wrong, but the numbers continue to reinforce our dour take on current economic conditions. The latest evidence comes in a set of numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday. Some quick calculations by senior economist Jared Bernstein showed that paychecks for typical workers are shrinking at an accelerating rate. January saw a loss of 1.4% in buying power, compared to steady real growth of 2.0% last year. The dive was caused by a combination of three factors: wage growth slowed, employers cut back on weekly hours, and inflation ticked up (boosted by high energy prices). Our prognosis is that wages will continue to stagnate or shrink through the year. As EPI President Larry Mishel said in a piece for The Nation by Nancy Cleeland, "For workers, this is as good as it's going to get for a while."

Outsourcing Debate Rages On By Joe Cogliano II (13919)

The outsourcing bug continues to pester Dave Siefring. The president of Cincinnati-based Laser Life, a producer of remanufactured toner cartridges, sees more prospects asking him to match lowball quotes that would wipe out any of his profit. Most of that pricing, Siefring suspects, is a result of products made overseas. “We feel it,” the 15-year industry veteran says of outsourcing. “I think anybody who says they don’t feel it is probably not being truthful with themselves

High Elevation Giving You Cold Feet? (13247)

Mountaineering requires energy, preparation, and the ability to persist despite inhospitable natural elements. But your body, hands, and feet can quickly chill when breathing in cold air, caught off guard by suddenly dropping temperature, or fighting "frozen facemask" syndrome, where breath moisture freezes to the wearer's facemask. Breathing cold, dry air can also hasten dreaded "climber's cough," which can cut even well prepared expeditions short. It can hinder climbing ability since lungs contract when breathing cold air, losing as much as 12% of vital lung capacity at 10 °F as shown in one human performance study.

Fiberglass Opens the Door To Cost-Effective Entry Options (13235)

While wooden front-entry doors have been the staple for hundreds of years, they certainly have had their problems. They require regular maintenance, especially if there are any extremes of heat, cold or precipitation. Temperature variations cause them to swell and shrink, creating problems with normal opening and closing. They're not well-insulated. And, last but not least, they're not cheap. In the 21st century, however, there is finally a cost-effective and durable alternative--fiberglass door systems.
